Essential Oil Uses for Natural Therapy

The practice of using essential oils in various medical traditions goes back thousands of years. There is no doubt that they were used in Ancient Chinese and Indian cultures and that they are still used today in Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic care. Essential oils are also recorded in drawings in ancient Egyptian culture for health and beauty treatments. Indeed much of the modern pharmaceutical industries can be traced back to people experimenting with various plants and fruits. Even to this day, many drugs are synthesized equivalents of the healing property of an exotic plant or flower. This article will cover some of the common essential oil uses from an aromatherapy point of view.

Using Essential Oils for Common Complaints

Essential oils used via aromatherapy can be beneficial to many common ailments like colds and flu. They can help with chest congestion, sinus problems and other respiratory complaints. Some examples that can be used are tea tree, basil, cedar wood, eucalyptus, peppermint and orange. There are a number of ways that it can be used. It can be diffused in the air, rubbed into the affected area or even breathed in. It can help to relieve and cure the problems.

Other Uses Essential oils are also useful in first aid. For instance, lavender is great for burns. It will relieve the pain and improve the healing rate too. Many oils can be used for insect bites and some, like citronella, can be used to sooth a bite and also act as an insect repellent. In terms of repelling insects you can simply burn the oil to create a scent that insects, mosquitoes in particular, hate.

As essential oils can also be applied to the skin they are useful as a massage oil. This can be a massage of sore muscles or even a sensual massage. Both these uses can have beneficial aspects to the person receiving the massage. They can be blended with other base oils for this purpose so that the massage oil lasts longer.

Essential oils can also be simply burned to create scent in the room. This can be good for helping change the state of mind of a person. It can lift them out of depression or help them to calm down after a hectic day at work. Useful oils are cinnamon, lavender, jasmine, ylang ylang and peppermint.

They can also remedy nervous complaints, for instance, by adding a few drops of lavender to a pillow you can help a person to sleep. This is useful for people that may be suffering from insomnia.

There are many more ways to use essential oils in aromatherapy and hundreds of different blends to create. Each oil will have differing healing properties and ways to be applied. Some may irritate the skin so have to be diluted. Others are non irritant. Others can be breathed in via a vapor bath and others are better passed through an air diffuser. This can be learned by studying Aromatherapy. Start off with pre-made varieties and graduate to making your own and experimenting with blended oils.
