The Dangers of Latex Allergies

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Latex is a form of rubber that can come in hardened or stretchy products. Because of the many forms of latex, it can be found in anything from doctor’s gloves to tennis shoes. However, some people suffer from latex allergies, and even the most minimal exposure can result in dangerous allergic reactions like anaphylactic shock. Allergic reactions occur when your immune system responds too strongly to another substance. Usually, this strong response is reserved for pathogens and other microbes that may hurt you. However, sometimes the immune system can react to other things, like the proteins found in latex.

Normally, even people with latex allergies can stand to be around hardened forms of this rubber, like tennis shoes and tires. However, the flexible, stretchy form of latex, or dipped latex, tends to give people more trouble. You can suffer from exposure to this rubber product either through direct touch or inhalation. Of course, direct contact can irritate your immune system, starting with your skin. However, some latex products, like rubber gloves, can give off latex-laden particles when snapped. If you inhale these particles, you can have an allergic reaction that manifests through cough or wheezing.

There are several different symptoms of a latex allergy, from mild to severe. Common signs of an allergic reaction include: Itching, Skin redness, Hives or a rash, Sneezing, Itchy eyes, Scratchy throat, Coughing, Wheezing. In some cases, a severe reaction can turn into anaphylactic shock. With this, contact with latex can cause you to suffer from a drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness or unconsciousness. You may also have difficulty breathing and a weak pulse. You can also suffer from nausea and vomiting. Sometimes, this can lead to respiratory failure and death. If you know that you have a latex sensitivity, you should always inform your doctor or nurse of this allergy before you can accidentally come into contact with this product. However, should a medical professional ignore your sensitivities or concerns, you can suffer from a serious allergic reaction that can put your life in danger.
